Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir said that there is a Saudi-Russian concern to coordinate in the face of the Qatari crisis during a press conference for the Saudi foreign minister and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Sunday in Jeddah as part of the Russian official’s visit to Saudi Arabia.
“Qatar has learned what is required of it, and we want to see a serious desire to find a solution to the crisis,” Jubeir said. He added that the crisis would continue until Qatar stops supporting terrorism and hosting wanted persons.
Jubeir said that Qatar’s support for terrorism is rejected by all countries around the world; Doha must respond to the list of demands so that we can have a new beginning.
He pointed out that Saudi Arabia supports establishing reduce tension areas in Syria looking forward to the political process. Jubeir added that Saudi Arabia welcomes Russia’s position regarding the Yemeni crisis, stressing that the Saudi Arabia and Russia positions on regional issues are identical.
Jubeir said the administration of US President Donald Trump was seeking new ideas to develop the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.
Lavrov said: “We are looking for new opportunities for cooperation between Russia and Saudi Arabia,” adding that Moscow supports the mediation efforts by the Emir of Kuwait to resolve the crisis in Qatar. The Russian foreign minister stressed that the GCC is “an important mechanism to resolve many issues and must be maintained.”
Lavrov said that he hope that the current mediation efforts for Gulf crisis would be effective.
On the Syrian issue, Lavrov said that establishing reduced tension areas in Syria increases the chances of resolving the crisis. He added that the threat of terrorism in the region would vanish and that an integrated political processes should begin, pointing out that Russia supports Saudi efforts to unite the Syrian opposition in one group, stressing that the Syrians only would decide the future of their country. He expressed hope to reach an agreement soon to reduce tensions in Idlib.
“We call for the Quartet to coordinate with the UN to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict,” Lavrov said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Jeddah on Saturday for a visit to the kingdom. He was received at the King Abdul Aziz International Airport by Jubeir, and a number of officials.
Lavrov will also be visiting Jordan during his trip to the region.
In Amman, Lavrov will meet King Abdullah and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi, Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.
During meetings in Jeddah and Amman, the diplomats will discuss means of cooperation with Riyadh and Amman, the Syrian crisis and the Gulf political rift.
