Andy Murray stormed into the China Open quarter-finals with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Andrey Kuznetsov on Wednesday, as on the outer courts the tournament's younger players appeared in control.
World number two Murray, in his first tournament since Great Britain's Davis Cup defeat, produced a composed display to see off the Russian without too much cause for concern in Beijing.
Earlier, British number two Edmund beat Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in three sets, the 21-year-old coming through 6-4 4-6 6-4 against the world number 18.
Other second-round matches saw fifth seed David Ferrer beat Italian Fabio Fognini 6-3 6-4 and Alexander Zverev of Germany knock out American Jack Sock 6-4 6-2.
