Ethiopia's Almaz Ayana runs away from her rivals to smash the women's 10,000-metre world record for Olympic gold in 29 minutes 17.45 seconds.
The 5,000m world champion Ayana took 14 seconds off the mark of 29:31.78 China's Wang Junxia had run 23 years ago in Beijing, a record which had always appeared untouchable, dpa reported.
Ayana and others took advantage of perfect conditions for distance running in the Olympic stadium, with four runners under the 30-minute barrier, which had only beaten by five runners before since 1993.
Kenya's Vivien Cheruiyot took silver in 29:32.53, two-time 10,000m gold medallist Tirunesh Dibaba took bronze in 29:42.46, and Kenya's Alice Nawowuna had 29:53.51 for fourth.
