After hours of debating, the Latvian government decided on Tuesday to close Riga Teacher Training and Educational Management Academy while its students and teaching staff staged a protest outside the Cabinet of Ministers house.
Latvian Education and Science Minister Karlis Sadurskis argued in support of the teacher academy's closure saying that "effectively, it is a reorganization," because the academy's study programs will be transferred to the University of Latvia and the Latvian Academy of Music, and that practically nothing will change for the students.
Supporters of Riga Training and Educational Management Academy said they were considering a lawsuit to stop the reform.
The teacher academy's rector Daina Voita pledged to "stand like a rock" for her students and employees and claimed that the public were being misled about financial gains from the academy's closure.
