High-flying Sport Recife needed a late penalty even to salvage a draw with Avai in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
Diego Souza's opener was overhauled by two goals in three minutes just before half-time, Renan equalising before Samuel Xavier's own goal. But Avai's Eduardo Neto collected a second yellow card in the last minute and Andre equalised from the spot.
The two dropped points, though, allowed Gremio and Atletico Mineiro to overtake Recife with 3-1 wins over Santos and Internacional respectively. Pedro Rocha gave Gremio an early lead and, after Geuvanio was sent off for Santos, Rafael Galhardo made it 2-0.
Ricardo Oliveira pulled one back but Yuri Mamute ensured there would be no late wobble. Maicosuel scored twice in Mineiro's success, either side of Anderson's dismissal for Internacional. Thiago Ribeiro's goal clinched it despite Lisandro Lopez pulling one back.
Figueirense came from behind to win 2-1 at Flamengo, Fabinho with the last-minute winner after Ricardinho cancelled out Alan Patrick's opener.
Dudu scored both goals in Palmeiras' 2-0 win away to Ponte Preta while there were goalless draws in the day's other two games, Sao Paulo against Fluminense and Goias against Corinthians.
