Colin Kaepernick believes he’s being blackballed for his political statements, and on Sunday filed a grievance accusing NFL owners of collusion.
Kaepernick played quarterback last season for the San Francisco 49ers, but six games into the 2017 season he is still a free agent, and no team has made an effort to sign him.
On Sunday, Bleacher Report first reported Kaepernick has filed a grievance under the league’s collective bargaining agreement and has hired celebrity attorney Mark Geragos to represent him.
Geragos confirmed the grievance in a statement late Sunday: “If the NFL (as well as all professional sports leagues) is to remain a meritocracy, then principled and peaceful political protests — which the owners themselves made great theater imitating weeks ago — should not be punished and athletes should not be denied employment based on partisan political provocation by the Executive Branch of our government.”
The league’s CBA prohibits owners from acting together to determine a player’s employment or contract status.
